Learning Journey's and Assessments

We operate a key worker system at pre-school which means that one adult will mainly be responsible for the assessment and support of your child. This adult will be your first point of contact when your child starts pre-school and thereafter. However, we are a small group and all adults work closely with the children, so if your child’s key worker is not available another member of staff may be able to help. All discussions and information will be passed on to your child’s key worker, but will remain confidential within the group. All staff are involved in the careful planning of activities to make sure that all children are catered for. Detailed ongoing observations are made using Early Essence, an online learning journey site, all parents will be given their own personal login details.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) starts from birth and continues on until the child reaches the end of the school reception year. They then move into Key Stage 1. The overarching aim of the EYFS is to help young children achieve the five Every Child Matters outcomes which are: Be healthy, Stay safe, Enjoy and achieve, Make a positive Contribution and Achieve economic well-being. The four themes of the EYFS are: A Unique Child, Positive Relationships, Enabling Environments and Learning and Development. These themes express important principles underpinning effective practice in the care, development and learning of young children. Please see the poster in the entrance for further information.
The EYFS is made up of seven areas of learning and development. All areas are connected to one another, are equally important and are underpinned by the principles and themes. Children are tracked through the phases of development to monitor their progress throughout their time at pre-school, ensuring they are offered the right amount of support where needed. All children will develop at different rates, in different areas.
During their time at pre-school we compile a ‘Learning Journey’, our child observations are now complied online using a company called, Early Essence, parents will have access to their own child’s online learning journey with private login details for each child, you will be able to add any comments or pieces of work/photographs to them yourselves.
The children will be assessed at various times throughout their time at Pre-school by using the information gathered on the Early Essence site. We will hold a parents welcome evening during the first half term in September, this is an opportunity to meet staff, your child’s keyworker and find out information about Pre-School. We also hold parental consultation day during the Spring term when parents can come in to discuss their child’s development.
